Plug-in / Filename Extension

Plug-in

Plug-in is a software module that adds a specific service or feature to a larger application. For example, plug-ins are commonly used in web browsers to play sound and video, scan for viruses and display different file types.

There are now hundreds of possible plug-ins. Among popular plug-ins are: Google Earth, Silverlight, Adobe Flash, and Quicktime.

Filename Extension

The filename extension is one or several letters at the end of a filename. Filename extension usually follows a dot, and allows a file's format to be described as part of its name.

Furthermore, the computer uses the filename extension to decide what program should open the file.
